18, 38 or 45 Inch? Picking the Right Pre-Rinse Replacement Hose Length

The thread still decides everything

None of the three lengths will help you if the ends don't mate with your fittings. The hoses covered here carry female 7/8”-20 UNEF on both ends — the standard end of a commercial pre-rinse hose, made to screw onto the male 7/8”-20 UNEF outlet of a spray valve and, at the other end, to receive the head. They are not suitable for NPT threads, which is what most household faucets use. If your setup is not a commercial pre-rinse unit, stop here and read the thread guide first, or run the sixty-second thread checker.

The quick sanity check: if the part you are replacing screws onto a commercial spray valve with a smooth, parallel thread and a washer, you are in the right place. If it gets narrower toward the tip, that is a tapered pipe thread and these hoses will not seal on it.

The measurement

Measure once, order once

You do not need the old hose in hand, though it helps. What you need is a tape measure and the path the hose actually travels:

Find the starting point. That is the outlet of your spray valve — where the hose hangs from the spring assembly at the top of the faucet.
Run the tape along the working path, not as the crow flies: down from the valve, and over to the farthest corner of the sink basin you actually rinse into. The hose hangs in a curve and swings, so follow the arc, not a straight line through the air.
Add the working margin. A hose that is pulled taut at full stretch kinks and wears at the fittings. Give yourself a few inches of slack past the farthest point.
When in doubt between two lengths, size up. Extra length lives coiled in the sink for a second; a short hose simply cannot reach. The one exception is a tight bar or under-counter setup, where a long hose catches on shelf brackets — there, the shorter option is the honest answer.

If the old hose is still intact, the fastest method of all is to lay it flat and measure it end to end, then match that number to the closest available length.

The three options

What each length is actually for

Length	Suits	Watch out for
18”	Compact stations: bar sinks, under-counter installs, tight prep areas, and setups where a long hose snags on shelving.	On a standard deep sink it will not reach the far corner. Measure before assuming the short one is "close enough".
38”	The common middle — typical commercial pre-rinse units over a standard sink. Close to what many factory hoses ship as.	Still verify against your own measurement. "Typical" is not a specification.
45”	Deep or wide sinks, large pots that need rinsing in place, and stations where the cook works at an angle to the basin.	Over a small bar sink the extra length becomes drag and clutter. More hose is not automatically better.

Heads, hoses and assemblies are different products. A bare hose replaces the hose only. If you need the spray head too, the head-only models screw onto your existing hose, and the 38” and 45” assemblies come as a matched head-plus-hose pair with three adapters included — though, to be plain about it, none of those adapters fits a household faucet either.

The short version

Check the thread first — female 7/8”-20 UNEF on both ends, never NPT. Then run the tape along the working path from the valve to the farthest corner you rinse into, add a few inches of slack, and buy the length that covers it: 18” for tight bars and compact stations, 38” for the common middle, 45” for deep sinks and big pots.
